Mark Whines About Whiners

This is not a follow-up to my healthcare posts.  I just had a thought that was so important that everyone in the world needs to know . . . or at least everyone who reads this blog.  Which is mostly my family.  Anyway, I've noticed that celebrities whine a lot.  Some people call it "activism," but coming from the rich and famous whose biggest problems seem to be deciding what dress to wear or who they'd rather be sleeping with besides their current significant other, it sounds a lot like whining.
I think the environment is important, and so do a lot of celebrities, apparently, but I really think they should stop "raising awareness" and actually do something.  All my life I've been told not to waste, as though I might single-handedly tip the delicate balance in which our ecosystem survives and send the planet spiraling down to destruction.  To some degree, I feel like Hollywood has contributed to my guilty feelings in this regard.  Last night as I brushed my teeth, I felt a twinge of guilt as I watched the water run down the sink while I did the last few brushes.  I try to turn the water off whenever I'm not using it, but occasionally I'll turn it on and then get the irresistible urge to brush a few more times (does that happen to anyone else?).
But, then I started thinking about the movie we'd just finished watching (The Incredible Hulk, in case you were wondering) and I thought "Wow, every time they film a scene where it's raining, they must just dump gallons and gallons of water right down the drain."  And then, if you have to re-shoot the scene . . . well, let me just say my toothbrushing problem didn't seem like such a big deal.  I mean, seriously, think about all those high power lights they use to make it look like daytime in a dim studio.  And all the paper, plastic, and wood that goes into making sets, and the gas it takes to fly/drive/boat them all over the place.  I mean, I know movies are expensive, so they're paying for all of this, but that's not really the point is it?  What's the environmental impact?  That's not even mentioning how much it costs to heat and light celebrities' palatial homes.  The worst part is, most movies aren't even good.  Most of them are stupid and are put out by the studios to make a little extra cash.  Should we allow the destruction of our planet to fuel corporate greed?  I think not.
So, Hollywood, you can tell me to conserve, as soon as you quit talking like you care and actually do something.  And quit whining about the environment as though you weren't a part of what must be one of the most wasteful professions on the planet.  So HA! Take that!  I bet they'll think twice about being wasteful now.
DISCLAIMER:  I really am all about reducing waste and protecting the environment.  I just generally don't like celebrities.  Especially whiny ones.

I had a similar experience at our last apartment complex... I'd get all OCD about taking trash items that were half-plastic and half-paper apart so we could put the paper and plastic in their respective recycling bins instead of just chucking them in the trash.

Then you walk outside where management was renovating other units in the complex, so they've got dumpsters full of sinks, bathtubs, cabinets, entire carpets, etc. Though I have to give them the credit that they were doing Mother Earth a favor by renovating about ten years past due, thereby extending the useful life of the previous fittings.

And there is a definite tendency to B&M about collective problems rather than do anything. This bugs, since if it's the whiner's job to make sure you know about the problem, that implicitly suggests that it's your job to fix it. (Not theirs. They've done their part by Raising Awareness.) Case in point: fellow grad students morosely talking about politics over this last year. How many of them actually went out and worked the campaigns, even for just one afternoon? I think maybe one. But there was a whole lot of Awareness going on every time they got together... which makes you think, "Maybe raising awareness doesn't actually lead to results."

(PS: this is Sarah realizing that Rob was already logged in to Google 2/3 of the way through her rant response.)

Mark, I'm ready for more whining and ranting or a new blog post at least.
I think taxpayers are allowed to rant and whine anywhere/anytime! Maybe we should limit whining time by percentage of taxes paid.
Random comment on recycling: I get tired of washing my trash.
